On February 24, middle school students from three Beaumont-area schools participated in MATHCOUNTS®, a nationwide math enrichment, coaching, and competition program. The chapter-level competition is made possible through the support of local engineering firms in the Beaumont area and leadership of the Sabine Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. MATHCOUNTS promotes math achievement with all the challenge of a school sports event. Student Mathletes® train individually and in teams. They can compete in local, state, and national competitions. Prizes are awarded at all levels.

This year, the program was coordinated by Patrick J. Kenney, P.E., of Tolunay-Wong Engineers, Inc. and the competition was held at Lamar University’s Cherry Engineering Building. Participating schools included Lumberton Middle School, Cleveland Middle School, and Odom Academy. Lumberton Middle School had the winning team with four students advancing to the state level competition to be held in Austin. Additionally, the top two individual competitors were from Cleveland Middle School, who will also advance to the state competition.

The top four students from the state-level competition will receive a free trip to Orlando for the 2017 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition. National winners receive scholarships and trophies.

In an interview, Mr. Kenney stated, “Building the math skills of our students is a national priority. MATHCOUNTS is critical because it targets middle school students, who are at a crucial age in sustaining and developing their math interest and ability.”

Mr. Kenney estimates that more than 250,000 students utilize MATHCOUNTS materials and over 5,200 schools participate in national competitions annually. More than six million students have participated since the program began in 1983.

The national sponsors of MATHCOUNTS are Raytheon Company, Northrop Grumman Foundation, U.S. Department of Defense, National Society of Professional Engineers, CNA Foundation, Phillips 66, Texas Instruments Inc., 3Mgives, Art of Problem Solving, and NextThought. MATHCOUNTS was founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and CNA Foundation.
